The Earth is God's and Everything In It - Psalm 24:1

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."
Genesis 1:1-2

Genesis establishes why we should live with a theocentric (God-centered) view of life.  The earth and its inhabitants are not an evolutionary accident, devoid of moral and spiritual meaning.  Genesis encourages that our lives have significance because we are created in God's image.  As such we should honor all that God created, including Mother Earth.

It's Earth Day and what exactly does that mean?    It is a day to think globally but act locally.  To do whatever you can do in your own home to conserve and protect this beautiful earth that has been on loan to us from the great creator-God.

Here's one thing you should be doing and if not, start today.  Recycle.  I have been doing this for many years and it's really very easy.  All you have to do is to purchase a separate plastic can (I have the blue one with the recycle symbol on it) and then put the new receptacle somewhere convenient so that you will actually use it!  I would say that one third of my trash is refuse and the other two thirds are recycle.

Another fun habit I have is recycling the greeting cards that I receive from friends.  This tradition was something that began as a Christmas project when I was a young girl.  My mom always saved the Christmas cards we got from others and made the next year's gift tags with them.  It became a game to see who could do the best job of matching the carefully cut tags to the gift wrap.  I have continued that tradition in my own family and I have even taken it a step further.   I cut and re-design birthday, thank you, and other miscellaneous cards that I get in the mail.  Not only do I make some unique, one-of-kind cards but it conserves the earth a bit and it saves me money too!

Earth Day is an annual day on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Earth Day is observed on April 22 each year. This date was designated as International Mother Earth Day by a consensus resolution adopted by the United Nations in 2009.  Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.  It is celebrated by 192 Nations around the globe.

Honor and respect God, others, yourself, and the earth.  Teach your children and grandchildren to do the same.

  1. I think of Earth as a Life form that breathes, needs daytime/rest-time/food+water just as does all life! When God created Earth and all creation, HE made us inter-dependent! The Earth would die and become just like a moon or big bare rock without Life growing and living on it, be it trees or animals or people. Likewise, Earth is what God gave for us to be able to have food, water, shelter, daytime, rest-time and to give also. God has given us opportunity to use not abuse all life, including Earth! Let us honour the Earth!

  3. Love your ideas for gift tags and other suggestions. Our house has a challenge to remove and recycle, re-gift or donate one thing per day on average for a year! So, that means I (we) go through the basement, back closets, garage... wherever weekly and find at least 7 items. After 35 years in this house we have accumulated so many reuseable, recycleable items it is amazing. Our other decision has been to ask no gifts for any reason unless handmade or home cooked. We have been blessed and after 40 years marriage, 40 Christmases, Birthdays, etc we now prefer only things personally created. We still help by donating to church bazaars and charities like Diabetes but these extra items that someone else can use are better given than gathering dust.

  4. Hi Donna,
It IS important to look after the environment. I worry about what the state of the environment will be when the young children of today grow up. We recycle items in our home too.
Thanks for the idea of recycling cards. It's a good idea. God bless you and Robert in your ministry.
